While electricity markets exist, the invisible hand of government has tilted the playing field in favor of renewables — such as solar and wind — over traditional generation sources, including coal. The challenge to owners of coal-based generation and accompanying coal mines is to stay profitable so their reliable and dispatchable sources can continue to deliver power when the renewables can’t operate, due to cold temperatures, no wind, clouds, etc.
