Mine production:

One of the 12 largest mines in the United States and the largest lignite mine in the country, the Freedom Mine supplies more than 15  million tons of lignite coal annually to the Great Plains Synfuels Plant.

Mine history:

The Coteau Properties Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of the North American Coal Corporation, was formed in 1972. Coteau, which owns the Freedom Mine, has been a steady and reliable supplier of lignite since deliveries began in 1983.
