The Canadian Clean Power Coalition’s Dave Butler briefed technical representatives of several regional utilities on the promising results from a study that was recently conducted. The study looked at capturing carbon dioxide from new plants using various new technologies.
Butler provided the information at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting on April 20, 2017.
The presentation provided a summary of the CCPC Phase V results, with the primary focus on new power plants, versus retrofitting existing power plants.
The study compared a new coal plant fitted with amine scrubbing to:
- Two high pressure closed cycles that use CO2 cycles instead of steam (closed Brayton Cycles),
- Oxy pressurized fluidized bed combustion boilers, and
- Supercritical CO2 Open Brayton Cycle – 8 River Capital and Allam Cycle.
The study showed that each plant achieved at least .4 t CO2/MWh GHG emission intensity, which is the Canadian regulation. For lignite-based plants, the reduction would be about 60 percent.
The CCPC project included engineering studies to evaluate the potential of various technologies, and Butler provided a summary of those results.
“The Lignite Energy Council’s involvement with the Canadian Clean Power Coalition is one where we seek to leverage our R&D assets with those of other similar international organizations,” said Mike Holmes, vice president of research and development for the Lignite Energy Council.
The results from the Phase V study are preliminary with final results being released later this summer.
