New workforce study reveals surprising results

Researchers at North Dakota State University worked with human resources professionals at the mines and power plants to compile information about the lignite industry. Before the study, we had anecdotal information about salaries, work locations, etc., but the research gives us facts that can be shared with policymakers and other elected officials regarding the jobs in the industry.

The lignite industry boasts some of the highest paying jobs in the state, which buoys the economy in Mercer, McLean and Oliver counties. The industry has a number of second and third-generation employees from families, which again shows the stability and strength of the industry.
