The Lignite Energy Council applauds the executive action announced at the White House directing the Department of Defense to pursue long-term power purchase agreements with U.S. coal-fired power plants to supply electricity for military installations.
“This announcement reinforces what our industry has long made clear: reliable baseload power from coal is foundational to grid stability, economic strength, and national security,” said Jonathan Fortner, President and CEO of the Lignite Energy Council. “Coal is always available. Our military cannot pause for a power outage, and our energy policy should reflect that reality.”
Coal generation remains a cornerstone of dependable energy in America, and this initiative helps safeguard critical coal resources and the jobs and communities they support.
“We applaud the Trump administration for this commonsense approach to dependable power for military installations and mission-critical facilities. This action will also benefit communities, families, and workers through increased grid stability,” he added.
As electricity demand continues to grow and power system stresses increase, backing dependable sources of generation like coal will keep the lights on, households warm, and industry productive.
