Lignite Energy Council President & CEO Jason Bohrer Statement on Sale of Coal Creek Station
Bohrer applauds deal to support community and thankful for Great River Energy’s years of community support
Jason Bohrer, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Lignite Energy Council offered the following statement following the news of the sale of Great River Energy’s (GRE) Coal Creek Station:
“The Lignite Energy Council (LEC) is grateful for Great River Energy’s many years of community support and leadership in North Dakota Coal Country. Today’s announcement of a deal for the sale of Coal Creek Station is welcomed news in Coal Country which will help ensure decades of ongoing prosperity to the region by providing good-paying jobs to both the power plant and adjacent coal mine. The LEC is thankful for leadership of Gov. Burgum, Lt. Gov Sanford, and other elected officials who worked tirelessly with GRE CEO David Saggau to protect the workers and communities from the potentially damaging effects of closure, but also to turn a new page for Coal Creek Station that could lead to continued innovation and deployment of technologies like carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) in the region. The LEC and its members worked with Governor Burgum and legislators during the 2021 legislative session to provide the new operator—and the entire coal industry—with improved economic policies along with access to the research and development funding and opportunities to develop and deploy CCS across the state.”
