Basin Electric Power Cooperative owns and operates the Leland Olds Station, Stanton, ND. The generating capacity of its two units is 660 MW. It became Basin Electric’s first power plant when the first unit began operation in 1966. The second unit began operating in 1975. Leland Olds Station consumes lignite provided by Dakota Coal Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Basin Electric. Dakota Coal rails coal from the Freedom Mine near Beulah, North Dakota, located about 30 miles west of Leland Olds.
