LEC meets with SPP leadership team
Earlier this week, Lignite Council’s Vice President of Government Relations and External Affairs Jonathan Fortner met with the Southern Power Pool’s (SPP) President and Chief Executive Officer Barbara Sugg along with key SPP officers to discuss a variety of current proposals that are ongoing among the market participants. Fortner shared both the opportunities and concerns on behalf of the lignite industry including his support for improved metrics that better value the reliability attributes that our dispatchable resources provide to the 14-state regional electric grid. Currently, SPP is going through an extensive governance review regarding sector representation on stakeholder committees and working groups. There is also a proposal to separate the current Alternate Power/Public Interest Sector into two sectors that would align more on an Industrial Sector that includes lignite and gas, and a renewable sector. For the past few years, LEC has been providing a voice for the lignite industry in the regional electricity markets (MISO & SPP) to advocate for improved market conditions.
The Lignite Energy Council constantly strives to bring more value to our members. In addition to our core program areas of Research & Development, Government Action, Public Affairs, and Education, the Lignite Council takes an active role in promoting the industry through organizations and activities that may exist on the outskirts of our primary focuses such as transmission, carbon utilization, and other coalition building activities. As we take on or participate in these other value-added opportunities, we will be doing a better job of letting our membership know about these efforts. #membershipvalueadd
