BISMARCK – The Lignite Energy Council will host the 2025 Lignite Education Seminar: Energy, Economics, and Environment June 9-12, 2025, at Bismarck State College. This free, four-day event is packed with activities and tours. Educators leave with the information and materials they need to teach their students about how lignite coal is mined and used to generate electricity for homes, farms and businesses in the Upper Midwest.
Participants will have the opportunity to tour an active coal mine and power generation site, getting a first-hand look at the economic impact the industry has. They will also be eligible to earn two graduate-level professional development credits at no cost, through the University of North Dakota, North Dakota State University, or Minot State University.
“The teacher seminar is a great way to teach the teachers, making sure they have accurate, factual information about the lignite industry to share with their students,” said Retha Mattern, Director of Education and Membership at LEC. “Through this seminar, we empower teachers to bring real-world energy discussions into their classrooms, providing students with an in-depth understanding of our region’s energy landscape.”
