Lignite Energy Council participates in the 40th annual Energy Generation Conference
This week, the Lignite Energy Council participated in the annual Energy Generation Conference held at the Bismarck Event Center. LEC staff managed a booth to promote the lignite industry and offer multiple drawings and giveaways to the conference attendees.
LEC’s Vice President of Research and Development Mike Holmes moderated the “Emerging Markets Panel – New and Emerging Markets for Lignite in ND.” There were six presentations (three each day) followed by a roundtable discussion on the following topics:
- Tom Erickson, Energy and Environment Research Center presented on subsurface storage of CO2 including EOR.
- Mike Holmes, Lignite Energy Council, talked on “regional economic benefits of CO2 capture and utilization.”
- Gerard Goeven, North American Coal’s Falkirk Mine, gave an update on a research project that is studying various ways to use CO2, low temperature process heat and off-peak electricity in greenhouses adjacent to power plants.
- Luke Hellier, Coalition for a Secure Energy Future addressed “The Demand Potential and Grid Impact of Electric and Autonomous Vehicles.
- Chad Wocken, Energy and Environment Research Center presented on “The Value Added Potential for Fertilizers, Fuels, Chemicals, Data Centers and Carbon Materials using North Dakota Lignite.
- Steven Benson, Microbeam Technologies presented on “The Lignite Research Summary of Rare Earth Element Extraction from Lignite Coal and Lignite Coal Ash.”
