BISMARCK, N.D. – The Lignite Energy Council’s Board of Directors has named Jonathan Fortner as the organization’s President and Chief Executive Officer, following a vote at its board meeting earlier today. Fortner has served as Interim President and CEO since March and becomes just the fourth individual to lead the Council in its 50-year history.
Fortner joined the Lignite Energy Council in 2018 and most recently served as Vice President of Government Affairs and External Relations. In that role, he led efforts to strengthen relationships with policymakers, coordinate industry-wide legal and regulatory initiatives, and advocate for policies that support the continued use of lignite coal as a reliable, affordable, and resilient energy source.
“Jonathan has earned the trust and respect of our members through his steady leadership, thoughtful approach, and strong commitment to the long-term success of North Dakota’s lignite industry,” said Mac McLennan, Chair of the Lignite Energy Council Board of Directors and CEO of Minnkota Power. “He brings a clear vision for the future and a proven ability to bring people together around shared goals.”
As President and CEO, Fortner will continue building on the Council’s mission to support a viable and forward-looking coal industry. His work has helped align industry partners on key policy priorities, elevate public understanding of coal’s role in energy reliability, and support the industry’s continued investment in research and development.
