BISMARCK – Lignite Energy Council President and Chief Executive Officer Jason Bohrer has announced plans to leave the Lignite Energy Council and continue his career in Washington, DC.
“Leading the Lignite Energy Council for the last 12 years has been an amazing experience, and I’m truly grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The lignite industry is filled with the greatest people in the world, and I count myself lucky to be associated with them,” Bohrer said. “There may be other places in the country that have great natural resources, but none of them have the unique combination of resources, people, policies and vision that we do. It has been an honor to be a part of Team North Dakota.”
During his 12 years of leadership, Bohrer also served on the National Coal Council, an advisory body for the U.S. Secretary of Energy, and the Empower North Dakota Commission, which was created by the North Dakota Legislature and charged with developing comprehensive energy policy recommendations for the state. He was also elected Chairman of the Lignite Research Council, an industry/government panel that advises the North Dakota Industrial Commission on funding of lignite-related marketing, environmental, and development projects.
“Jason has been an incredible advocate for the lignite energy sector,” said LEC Board Chair and Minnkota Power Cooperative President and CEO, Mac McLennan. “He has led the industry through a rapidly changing federal landscape and an evolving marketplace, but under his leadership we have seen regulatory successes, the development of emerging markets such as critical minerals and great leaps forward in technological innovation.”
The LEC Board of Directors will be engaged in a comprehensive process to select a successor to Bohrer.

The Lignite Energy Council, the voice for North Dakota’s coal industry, is a regional trade association representing lignite producers, electric utilities, and more than 200 businesses that supply goods and services to the mines and plants. The lignite industry also facilitates nearly 12,000 direct and indirect jobs across the state, strengthening North Dakota’s economy and energy landscape.
