When Lori Shaw saw the negative messages against her coal mining hometown of Colstrip, Montana, she and a friend founded Colstrip United, a grassroots movement dedicated to making the lesser-known, positive information about coal and coal energy more available to the public.
Shaw uses the power of social media to spread her message of positivity and facts about all the good things coal does for the hardworking people of Colstrip and the rest of the country. She believes activism is for everyone.

Trent Loos | Oct. 5
Our closing luncheon speaker, Trent Loos, has been called an agricultural activist for his energetic campaign to use the airwaves in his mission to connect rural and urban America by sharing the positive story of production agriculture.
Loos began broadcasting his “Loos Tales” in 2001, on radio station KMZU in Missouri. Today, he has 4 million listeners on more than 100 radio stations across the country.
Loos is a sixth generation rancher who lives in central Nebraska. He founded the Faces of Agriculture, a non-profit organization, in 2003 along with a small group of livestock producers who were motivated to convince consumers that the abundant supply of safe, healthy food eaten in this country is produced by real people, who live and work on farms.
“Trent Loos is a voice familiar to people living in our region because he speaks about America’s agriculture,” said Jason Bohrer, president and CEO of the LEC. “Like the coal industry, agriculture faces tough critics who want to ignore its importance and attack it. Trent has emerged as a voice defending his industry and we can learn from his example.”
