Electric vehicle charging demand study released

The University of North Dakota’s Energy & Environmental Research Center recently published a study aimed at understanding grid impacts and utility planning requirements to address increased numbers of electric vehicles (EV). It is slated that the number of EV sales could grow to approximately 17,000 EVs in North Dakota and approximately 300,000 EVs in Minnesota by 2030. This could result in an increase in peak demand of approximately 19 MW in North Dakota and approximately 352 MW in Minnesota. One major takeaway from the study is that high EV charging demand can be used to increase coal plants utilization and charging EVs during off-peak hours can fill up the low periods of demand to ensure 90% of maximum generation capacity.
