The Lignite Energy Council is proud to announce another episode of their new podcast titled “Mined: Lignite Energy in America.”
Each week, host Kate Muggerud interviews leaders within the energy industry on a variety of topics. Kate Muggerud began the podcast to explore and learn more about the energy field and emerging markets. Her goal is to connect with others who have the same interest and wish to become more knowledgeable about the field.
On this week’s episode, Kate interviews Steve Benson, president of Microbeam Technologies out of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Steve talks about various projects his company is working on – from new markets for lignite to the next generation of advanced power plant technologies.
Microbeam has studied the properties of lignite coal and how it reacts in different processes. Benson describes lignite as a “young fuel” which offers opportunities to process it more easily than other coal resources when making carbon-based products such as activated char. This type of product can be used for water purification and removing minute particles of mercury from an industrial flue gas stream.
Technologies like these are being studied by Microbeam to identify keys which unlock and monetize North Dakota’s vast resources of lignite far into the future.
Mined: Lignite Energy in America is sponsored and produced by the Lignite Energy Council, a trade association representing the power plants, mines and the Great Plains Synfuels Plant in North Dakota along with more than 300 companies that provide goods and services to the lignite industry.
