Electric vehicles: Driving demand for lignite coal

The Lignite Energy Council’s March Table Topics shows the impact that electric vehicles can have on the lignite industry. They also are an affordable family vehicle option. According to a study conducted by Drive Electric ND, “Drivers can also save significant amounts of money because of the low-energy costs in the state. Average electric rates in ND are 0.09 per killowatt-hour or 23% below the national average. Driving an EV 15,000 miles in one year would cost approximately $405.00 per year to charge, based on average driving habits. EVs can save on maintenance costs too. With fewer moving parts, electric vehicles require less maintenance, improving reliability and saving money over the life of the vehicle.”
