The Lignite Energy Council’s annual awards program exists to recognize the people and organizations whose hard work, dedication, and leadership keep North Dakota’s lignite industry strong. From the mine face to the statehouse, from the classroom to the research lab, there are people in every corner of this industry who deserve to be celebrated.

Each year at the Annual Conference, the Lignite Energy Council presents awards across several categories recognizing excellence in safety, research, education, public service, government action, community involvement, and more. Not every award is presented every year. Selections are based on the strength of nominations received.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the following awards:
Ambassador of Lignite Award
Recognizes retiring industry professionals for years of outstanding service and dedication to the lignite industry.
Community Service Award
Recognizes an individual or organization for exceptional service to communities in the lignite region.
Contractor/Supplier of the Year Award
Recognizes a Contractor or Supplier member for outstanding service to the Lignite Energy Council.
Distinguished Service Award – Education
Recognizes outstanding contributions to lignite energy education programs.
Distinguished Service Award – Government Action
Recognizes outstanding engagement with the LEC’s Government Action Program.
Distinguished Service Award – Public Affairs/Public Relations
Recognizes outstanding service to public affairs and communications efforts supporting lignite.
Distinguished Service Award – Research & Development
Recognizes outstanding service to the lignite industry’s research and development efforts.
Distinguished Service Award – Regulatory Program
Recognizes outstanding contributions to regulatory affairs on behalf of the lignite industry.
John Weeda Legacy Award
Recognizes an individual, organization, or facility whose actions have safeguarded the long-term viability of lignite-based power in North Dakota through leadership, innovation, or behind-the-scenes efforts, honoring the legacy of John Weeda.
Lignite Lifetime Achievement Award
Recipient had a long successful career in the lignite industry, with a majority of that time being spent in the Fort Union lignite region.
